Serpent was
formed 1993 by Lars Rosenberg (at the time in Entombed) and
Andreas Wahl (was then a member of Concrete Sleep, later in
Therion). Their first demo was recorded after just a few
months After that Piotr Wawrzeniuk joined to play drums and sing,
plus that they found a lead guitarist, Johan Lundell. Andreas left
Serpent and was replaced by former Suffer-guitarist,
Ulf Samuelsson.
The four of them recorded the band’s
debut album, "In The Garden Of...Serpent", at the In Deep Studio in
Stockholm, Sweden. They recorded their debut with the producer and
owner Anders Paulsson (later with Atomic Swing, before they
split-up). Nuclear Blast sub-label, Radiation Records released the
Serpent debut in 1996.
Just before the actual release of the
debut album, Piotr decided to leave his drumkit to concentrate only
his vocal duties. A new drummer was found: Per Karlsson (ex Suffer).
The debut "In The Garden Of...Serpent" shows their quality,
influenced by bands like The Obsessed, Motorhead and Black
Sabbath.
In the meantime, Serpent’s
former bassplayer Lars Rosenberg left the band. The one who took his
place was no one else than founding member, Andreas Wahl. With the
new line-up they recorded the track ‘The Fog’ for two compilation
CD`s, one for Burn Records and one for the Shadows Of Michelangelo
Magazine CD-sampler. At the same time they also signed a deal with
the Swedish Metal label Heathendoom Music.
In April `97, they entered Adolf
Fredriks Musikskola`s studio in Stockholm, Sweden with the engineer
Peter Hansson (earlier with Therion) to start the recordings
for the second album, ‘Autumn Ride’. This album was mixed by
Tomas Skogsberg and Serpent at the legendary Sunlight
Studio.
The "Autumn Ride" CD did pretty good
and sold over 2.000 copies and Serpent was featured in many
magazines around Europe like Hammer!, Heavy Oder Was!?...etc.
During 1999, Serpent also
recorded a track for the Black Sabbath tribute album
"Dehumanized Witch" (DIO-era). But actually it was taken off the
album as the label who released it thought that Serpent had
changed to much lyric wise. They did a version of the track ‘Master
Of Insanity’ from ‘Dehumanizer’ and in the end of the track they
changed ‘Master Of Insanity’ to ‘Master Of Reality’ instead.
The new album, ‘Trinity’, is a cool and
very rare recording from the summer of 1999 with lots of groovy and
doomy riffs mixed with killer vocals from Piotr Wawrzeniuk (best
known for his vocal contributions on many Therion albums like
‘Theli’ and ‘A `Arab...’for example). You can also find influences
from bands like Thin Lizzy.
Vic Records
will re-release the second album ‘Autumn Ride’ including a very rare
and previous unreleased bonus track.
